Developing Country Potluck Cancelled for Thursday

Due to the inclement weather, we will not be doing the Developing Country Potluck this Thursday. If we do have school, late opening or not, we will NOT have the potluck until after winter break. Sorry to cancel, but with not knowing about a late start or weather cancelling school, I did not want there to be any questions.

It will give us something to look forward to after break!

Caddilac Desert

Cadillac Desert Response:

Cadillac Desert: “Mulholland’s Dream” chronicled the growth of a thriving civilization in the great American desert, the sometimes violent resistance to this achievement, the abundance it has brought, and the risk it has created home and abroad.

In your response, you will need to chronicle the major events that took place in leading up to/and during the process of this major engineering feat. What do you think were the three most crucial turning points (justify your reasoning)?

Do you think that there is any way L.A. could be somewhat close to how it is today if history had been different, (no aqueduct)? Did the events that took place lay the groundwork for some of societies current views on ecosystem capital usage? Or do you believe these views inevitable?

How did the final events leading up to the powerhouse development of L.A. shape our (societies) views at that time in reference to a “predestination” approach to ecosystem capital?

This is an opinion response with a scaffolding framework of historical facts. There is no specific format that is required. I assume it will take at least a ½ to chronicle events, and the rest to parley your opinion, and justify your reasoning.
I do expect that you cite at least 2 outside sources in your response.

Your response is due Tuenday December 13th by 11:59 pm.

Response to 3rd World Farmer game

Although we don't want to trivialize the hardships that so many people endure in developing countries, the 3rd World Farmer game does help bring to the forefront some of the issues that people deal with. The goal of the game is to go through demographic transition and create sustainable affluence.

Simply put, what were the most difficult aspects in this game? Why was it so hard to get out of poverty? If you could change one thing about the game (variables that effected your success), what would you change? How does this apply to real world situations?

You must comment your responses t the above questions no later than Monday Oct 17th 11:59 pm.

Tragedy of the Commons

In 1833, Victorian economist William Forster Lloyd used the suppositional example of unregulated grazing on common land (the land referred to at that time as "commons" in the British Isles) as a platform for the discussion on- what seems profitable for one individual may hurt the whole community.

In 1968, the term "commons" was adapted and popularized by Ecologist Garret Hardin in his work, "Tragedy of the Commons". Hardin emphasized the concept that individual commons wealth attained through unregulated resource allocation and consumption is detrimental to the whole. This in turn would lead to instability for the individual as well.

Hardin has some interesting ideas and rationalization in his essay. It is important to note that this was written over 45 years ago. Hardin at times is very direct in his explanations and justification for certain perspectives, especially when it comes to reproduction and what measures must be taken with those that do not fall in line.

Please read "The Tragedy of the Commons" and answer the questions at the bottom of this post. Make sure that you support your reasoning. We will also use your responses as a platform for class discussion next week.

You will need to comment your response no later than Thursday 11:59 p.m.

Questions

1) Hardin argues that an unenforced appeal to conscience is an unworkable solution to the population problem. What do you think of this argument? Does this argument rule out the general effectiveness of shifts in attitude or ideology?

2) Hardin writes that “natural selection favors the psychological forces of denial”. What does this mean? Do you agree with Hardin?

3) What do you think of Hardin's argument that the freedom to breed is intolerable?
